  3.      This patch archive will update version 2.3 or 2.3A of
  4.      ExtenDOS Pro to version 2.4.  If you have version 2.1
  5.      or 2.2, you must first obtain EPRO_23A.ZIP which updates
  6.      2.1 or 2.2 to 2.3A.  If you have version 2.0, you must
  7.      first obtain EPRO_210.ZIP which updates 2.0 to 2.1.

  9. Introduction
  10. ============

  12.   This patch updates Anodyne Software's ExtenDOS Pro package from
  13.   version 2.3 or 2.3A to version 2.4.  After applying this patch,
  14.   you will have the following versions of these ExtenDOS Pro
  15.   modules:

  18.       CDAUDIO.ACC     2.4
  19.       CDAUDIO.PRG     2.4
  20.       DISC.RSC        2.4

  28.   NOTE: This patch program is designed to update your ExtenDOS Pro
  29.   _distribution_ diskette to version 2.4.  Once you have completed
  30.   the update, you will need to install the updated version using
  31.   INSTALL.APP v2.4.  The entire process is explained below under
  32.   "How to update".

  57. Do I need to update ?
  58. =====================
  59.  
  60.   You _must_ update if you wish to access your CD-ROM drive from the
  61.   MagiC4 desktop.  Even if you do not use the MagiC4 desktop, we
  62.   recommend that you perform the update, since this update adds some
  63.   new features, and fixes some bugs in earlier versions.

  66. What is needed to update
  67. ========================
  68.  
  69.   .   This archive file, and:
  70.  
  71.   .   An ExtenDOS Pro distribution disk, version 2.3, or
  72.   .   An ExtenDOS Pro distribution disk, version 2.3A
  73.  
  74.   You also need a double-sided floppy drive formatted to 800K
  75.   (10 sectors per track) or at least 800K of free space on a hard
  76.   disk drive.  Due to the size of the files involved, you will not
  77.   be able to carry out the update on a single-sided drive.

  80. How to update
  81. =============
  82.  
  83.   1.  Copy your ExtenDOS Pro distribution disk EITHER to an empty
  84.       double-sided disk OR to an empty folder on a hard disk with at
  85.       least 800K free space.  In the following instructions, this
  86.       area will be referred to as the "update work area".
  87.  
  88.   2.  Delete the following files (if present) from the update work
  89.       area:
  90.           SCSI.TXT
  91.           SCSI_FAQ.TXT
  92.       This is needed to provide sufficient work space.
  93.  
  94.   3.  Copy the PATCH240.TOS file to the update work area.
  95.   
  96.   4.  Run PATCH240.TOS from the update work area, by double-clicking
  97.       on it from the desktop.  For each of the files that need to be
  98.       updated, the program will create a backup copy of the original
  99.       file (with a .BAK extension) and then update the original file
  100.       to the v2.4 level.  The following files are updated:
  101.           CD.BOS
  102.           CDAUDIO.ACC
  103.           CDAUDIO.PRG
  104.           DISC.RSC
  105.           EXTENDOS.PRG
  106.           UNIDRIVE.DOS
  107.           UNI_BDDS.DOS
  108.           EXTINFO.PRG
  109.           INSTALL.APP
  110.           INSTALL.RSC
  111.       The final message should be "10 modules patched successfully".
  112.       If not, please read the error messages carefully; they should
  113.       indicate what the problem is.  You will probably need to begin
  114.       the entire patch process again.  If you cannot resolve the
  115.       problem, please see below under "If you get an error message".
  116.  
  117.   5.  Delete the following files from the update work area:
  118.           PATCH240.TOS     (no longer required)
  119.  
  120.   6.  Replace the following files in the update work area with the
  121.       corresponding files from this archive:
  122.           READ.ME
  123.  
  124.   7.  (Optional, but recommended)
  125.       Copy CHECKIT.TOS and CHECKIT.CTL to the update work area, and
  126.       double-click on CHECKIT.TOS.  It will perform a simple checksum
  127.       verification on each of the files you updated or replaced in
  128.       step 4 above.  You should see the message "verified OK" for
  129.       each of the ten files.  If so, please delete CHECKIT.TOS and
  130.       CHECKIT.CTL from the update work area.
  131.       If you get any messages indicating that a module failed to
  132.       verify, it's probable that your newly-updated copy of ExtenDOS
  133.       Pro is invalid.  Try obtaining another copy of this archive and
  134.       redoing the update.  Alternatively, you can have your disk 
  135.       updated by Anodyne Software: please see below under "If you get
  136.       an error message" for how to order the update.

  138.   8.  Congratulations!  You have completed updating the files in the
  139.       update work area.  Now, for safety, first copy them to a backup
  140.       floppy disk.  Then, delete all of the existing files from the
  141.       ExtenDOS Pro distribution disk, and copy the files from the
  142.       update work area to the distribution disk.  Finally, remove all
  143.       the files from your update work area.
  144.  
  145.   ** VERY IMPORTANT STEP, READ CAREFULLY **
  146.  
  147.   9.  To install this version on your system, use the new INSTALL.APP
  148.       program on your (updated) distribution disk; the READ.ME file
  149.       on the updated disk explains how to do this.
  150.       
  151.   10. Please take the time to read the new READ.ME file carefully.
  152.       It contains information about all the new features of ExtenDOS
  153.       Pro v2.4.

  156. If you get an error message
  157. ===========================
  158.  
  159.   If you get an error message during the patch process and cannot
  160.   resolve the problem, you can mail us the disk so that we can
  161.   update it.
  162.  
  163.   To have your disk updated by us, you need to:
  164.  
  165.   1.  Send in your original ExtenDOS Pro distribution disk.
  166.   2.  Enclose a cheque or money order for $5 + $2 shipping & handling
  167.       ($7 total).  You may pay in Canadian dollars if you are located
  168.       within Canada; all payments for shipments outside Canada must
  169.       be in US dollars.
  170.   3.  Enclose a note with your name, address, and phone number.

  172.   In return you will receive a disk containing ExtenDOS Pro v2.4.

  188. Changes for v2.4 compared to v2.3A
  189. =================================
  190.  
  191. New features
  192. ------------
  193. 1. Supports the extended GEMDOS calls (a la MiNT) that the MagiC4
  194.    desktop uses.  This allows access to CD-ROMs from the MagiC4
  195.    desktop.
  196.  
  197. 2. Before attempting to read a CD-ROM, ExtenDOS Pro checks for the
  198.    presence of an audio CD.  If so, a volume label of 'AUDIO-CD' is
  199.    returned (this will be displayed by the MagiC4 desktop and will
  200.    act as a reminder).  Also, any attempt to access data on the disk
  201.    will be rejected with the GEMDOS error 'path not found', thus
  202.    preventing interruption of any current audio playback.
  203.  
  204. 3. Read errors now cause additional retry attempts, thereby increasing
  205.    the likelihood of successful reads under adverse conditions.
  206.  
  207. 4. Now supports the following additional drive:

  214. 5. Additional checking for a CD-ROM change is now done for all Sanyo
  215.    drives.  This is designed to circumvent a problem in the firmware
  216.    on at least some Sanyo drives: they do not report media change.

  219. Bug fixes
  220. ---------
  221. 1. If the year in the file date on a CD-ROM is less than 1980, the
  222.    TOS time/date is returned as 1980/01/01 00:00:00 rather than
  223.    something strange.
  224.  
  225. 2. The SCSI bus is reset under some additional timeout conditions;
  226.    this increases the likelihood of recovery from these conditions.
